The Science Behind Neurofeedback

How It Works

Neurofeedback Takes Practice

Neurofeedback is akin to learning to ride a bicycle. You can't master it in a classroom; you have to practice. Similarly, during a Neurofeedback session, your brain receives EEG Biofeedback, helping it self-regulate brain states related to how we think, feel and perform in life. Just as you always remember how to ride a bike, the improvements you make are lasting.

Imagine working out just 20-30 times and keeping the gains forever. With Emerald Coast NeuroFeedback, that's possible. Neurofeedback is a workout for your brain that can help you feel better, improve focus, and enhance performance with lasting results.

Your brain is composed of electrical and chemical systems. While medication alters the brain's chemistry, EEG Biofeedback trains the brain's electrical system, resulting in functional improvements without risky side effects.

Our Neurofeedback Process

1. Initial Evaluation

2. Feedback Sessions

3. Session Frequency

4. Re-evaluation

Neurofeedback is safe, non-invasive, and drug-free.

Nothing goes into your brain. Sensors are placed on the scalp to read your brain's natural electrical activity — there is no electrical stimulation, no medication, and no procedure of any kind.

Each session is simple: you sit in a comfortable chair watching a screen or listening to gentle tones while the software gives your brain feedback. The process is painless and used safely with both children and adults.

Your Brainwaves Affect How You Feel, Think, and Perform

Optimizing Brainwaves for Better Function

Brainwaves, made up of millions of neurons firing at once, convey information through their frequency and amplitude. They are measured in Hertz and correspond to different functions, such as emotions, physical movement, and concentration. Symptoms of sub-optimal functioning arise when specific frequencies do not fire optimally.

For example, beta frequencies are not ideal for sleep, causing insomnia, while delta frequencies during the day can lead to fatigue. The brain's remarkable capacity for change ("neuroplasticity") allows it to form new connections and improve its function through Neurofeedback.

The Brain Regulates All Important Aspects of Your Life

Neurofeedback, including EEG Biofeedback, assists the brain in improving its function, reorganizing, and healing itself. A dysregulated brain can lead to numerous health problems due to an over-aroused, under-aroused, or unstable state. Neurofeedback trains the brain to regulate itself, leading to better feeling, thinking, and performance.

Disadvantages of Medication

  • Loss of effectiveness over time
  • Dependence/withdrawal
  • Negative side effects (e.g., constipation, dizziness, drowsiness)
  • Effective only while taken

Advantages of Neurofeedback

  • Helps the brain teach itself to change
  • All natural – non-invasive
  • No harmful side effects
  • Long-lasting results

I reached a point where I knew enough was enough. After enduring significant trauma throughout my life, both in childhood and adulthood, I desperately needed a change. Reaching out to Emerald Coast NeuroFeedback was the best decision I could have made. The results have been nothing short of life-altering. Neurofeedback at Emerald Coast NeuroFeedback has made my anxiety, mood swings, and trauma triggers remarkably manageable. I can now fall asleep peacefully at night without the torment of spiraling thoughts.

I have only completed about 8 Neurofeedback sessions under Pam's direction, and my brain has already made wonderful strides in the lacking areas of my mind that I suffered — anxiety and depression. From the onset, I was quite skeptical about this process, doubtful of feeling any benefits from it, if any, would be minimal, if at all. I was so wrong, it WORKS! Do not hesitate.

I took my 3.5 year old and had no idea what to expect. He had behavior issues that were not just normal tantrums and we were at our wits end. It took some time and a switch in protocols, but he is a different child. The last 2 months have been the best months we've ever had with him. He is sweet, bubbly, manages his emotions, and is the most amazing kid. His teachers have noticed a huge change. It's really been life changing.

— Molly K., parent of a 3-year-old

It was a fantastic experience. I did the full 20 sessions and thought it was definitely worth my time because each time I did it I could see results. I primarily went in for my back pain to manage it — I'm able to manage the pain better now, but there are a lot of the other attributes going through this program that helped me in a lot of different ways. As a pilot or somebody in a fast-pace environment this can only be another attribute in your performance. I would highly recommend it.
